Taiko Film is a documentary that introduces us to the enthralling world of Taiko. We will learn about its origins, history and evolution throughout centuries, its many applications and styles, its expansion to the world and its influence in modern culture, both Eastern and Western.
The documentary includes interviews with relevant taiko figures, as well as other personalities related to this artistic discipline, and performances of several groups and styles.
The project is an ode to Music in general, and to taiko in particular. A praise for music’s best qualities through an instrument with a sound capable of transmitting/ sharing emotions, bringing people together and promoting dialogue.

This fall, we also offer three NEW classes: private shinobue (bamboo flute) lessons for beginners, Hatha Yoga Flow (2 days only, Tuesdays November 10, 17 at 5:30 pm), and Taiko Tailored Workshop (4 classes only, Sundays November 15, 22, 29, December 6 at 2 pm). The concert honors two of Kenny’s mentors: Barbara B Smith, esteemed ethnomusicologist who just celebrated her 100th birthday, and William P Malm, foremost academic expert of Japanese music who recently donated a set of Edo Bayashi instruments which will be showcased.
The concert also celebrates Kenny’s 45th anniversary of playing taiko.
SCEP Live Online concert series is a joint effort between the UH Mānoa Outreach College, UH Mānoa Music Department, the East-West Center Arts Program, and Friends of Manoa Library.
