In case you missed the PBS Hawaii Special “Feel the Beat” which aired October 31, 2019 on “Hiki No” …students from Hawaiʻi Baptist Academy (Honolulu) tell the story of the taiko drumming class for the deaf held by the Taiko Center of the Pacific. The deaf students learn to drum through visual cues and through a sign language interpreter. Although they cannot hear the drums, they can feel the vibration of the drum beats with their bodies. They don’t consider their deafness as a limitation to taiko drumming and, as a result, their confidence and self-esteem are lifted through this activity.
