Taiko Set – Kenny Endo (all levels)
The practice and performance techniques of playing multiple taiko will be covered in this workshop including: stance, grip, basic grooves, independence, soloing, traditional Japanese rhythms, and accompaniment. 16th note back beat, Brazilian, Cuban, and patterns from Edo Kotobuki Jishi (Tokyo Lion Dance) will be covered. Tsugaru Shamisen – Hiromitsu Agatsuma (all levels)
A very special opportunity to learn from one of Japan’s top Tsugaru shamisen artists.

Learn the percussive style of shamisen playing from the cold Tsugaru region of Aomori prefecture. Larger and with thicker strings than that used for most other styles, the Tsugaru shamisen, considered to be the most recognized genre of shamisen music, is growing more and more popular because of its percussive quality and the lilt of the rhythms performed.

Please bring your own shamisen.  Limited number of shamisen available for rental fee.

Double Beta-Uchi  – Sean Shibata (all levels)
Drumming rudiments and technique for two upright taiko placed side by side. Build visually and musically interesting phrases with arm over arm cross sticking in different meters, changing the leading hand, etc. movement between the two drums.

FOUR partial youth scholarships for the Sho’on Shibata “Double Beta-Uchi” STI class are available through the generous support of the Dr. Ric Fund for Education, Arts, and Culture of the Hawai’i Community Foundation. To apply, please fill out the application and email it to taikoarts@gmail.com.

Katsugi Daiko – Yosuke Oda (all levels)
Learn the basics of popular katsugi drumming. Slung over the shoulder, it is portable enabling one to move around the stage while drumming. A very spirited katsugi player, Yosuke Oda will bring out the joy of playing the katsugi drum while also teaching the basics.
Please bring your own katsugi drum.  Limited number of katsugi available for rental fee.

Passionate and immensely powerful, Yosuke is an amazing odaiko drummer.  He will help you find your inner voice through the big drum.

Hana Hachijo – Chieko Kojima (all levels)
Elegant, graceful, and powerful, Hana Hachijo is an interpretation of a folk drumming style from Hachijo island- one of the few places in Japan where women have traditionally been allowed to drum.

A rare opportunity to learn from one of the greatest. Learn philosophy, methodology (re: posture, movement, balance), ji-uchi patterns, typical Hachijo rhythmic patterns, how to develop one’s solo, and more.
